Professor Is-haq Oloyede, popularly known as Is-haq Oloyede, was born on October 10, 1954, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Is-haq Oloyed, whose full name is Professor Is-haq Olarewaju Oloyede, was born on October 10, 1954, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Is-haq is a distinguished academic and administrator known for his massive contributions to Islamic studies and educational reform in Nigeria over the years. 

Early Life 

Currently, there’s no information about his early life. He was born in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. He’s from a Muslim family, and both his parents are Muslim. Likewise, he’s from the Yoruba tribe in Nigeria. 

Education 

According to the available information, Is-haq Olarewaju Oloyede attended Progressive Institute, Agege, Lagos (1969–1973). Before he proceeded to attend Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Arabic Training Centre, Agege (Markaz) from 1973 to 1976. 

In 1977, Is-haq was able to earn a certificate in Arabic and Islamic Studies from the University of Ibadan.  This time, Is-haq continued his education as he obtained a B.A. in Arabic from the University of Ilorin in 1981, also continued to earn a Master’s degree in 1985, and a Ph.D. in Islamic Studies in 1991 from the same University of Ilorin.

Career

Is-haq Olarewaju Oloyede started his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Religions at the University of Ilorin in 1982.  Is-haq was promoted to the ranks to become a Professor of Islamic Jurisprudence in 1995. 

In 2007, Is-haq Olarewaju Oloyede was appointed to fill the position of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, he is the first alumnus to hold this position.  During his time in Unilorin, the university achieved significant advancements in infrastructure, academic excellence.

JAMB Secretary General

In August 2016, Professor Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede was appointed the Registrar and Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). He has been able to transform JAMB into one of Nigeria’s most transparent and technologically advanced public institutions since he took the position. 

Over the years, JAMB faced several problems, especially when it comes to corruption, inefficiencies in the conduct of examinations, and poor revenue remittance. 

During his tenure, the board introduced groundbreaking reforms, like full computer-based testing (CBT), automated examination processes, and even the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), these are introduced to increase fairness and eliminate human interference in university admissions.

One of the biggest achievements during Is-haq Olarewaju Oloyede’s tenure is the massive increase in revenue remitted to the federal government.

In Is-haq Olarewaju Oloyede’s first year in office, JAMB was able to remit over N7.8 billion, which is more than the amount the board had generated in its entire history. 

Over the years, Is-haq Olarewaju Oloyede has focused on integrity, accountability, and innovation, which has helped to get both national and international praise.

Aside from JAMB, Oloyede is currently serving as the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), a position he has held since May 2013, where he plays an important role in promoting religious tolerance and interfaith dialogue.

Recent JAMB Error 

In the 2025 UTME, JAMB faced numerous major technical errors that affected over 380,000 candidates in Lagos and the South-East. The main source of this error is caused by an unimplemented system upgrade, leading to several problems, including mismatched exam questions, wrongscoreses and others.

Within a few days of releasing the results, JAMB Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, admitted the fault nd made a public apology. heHeot emotional during the press briefing. 

Is-haq Olarewaju Oloyede chose to take full responsibility and announced a retake for affected candidates starting May 16, 2025.

There are several public calls for his resignation from educational associations and organisations, regardless Oloyede refused, stating it would be wrong to abandon the process mid-crisis.

  • National Coordinator and Executive Secretary of the National Inter–Religious Council (NIREC) in 2007. 
  • Deputy Chairman of the Governing Board of the International Association of Universities (IAU) between 2008 and 2011. 
  • President of the Association of African Universities (AAU) from 2009 to 2011. 
  • Secretary-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) since May 2013.  
  • Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU) from 2013 to 2017. 

Honors and Recognitions

Likewise, Professor Oloyede has made numerous contributions to their Nigerian educational system. So he has been recognized with several honors: 

  • Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR). 
  • Fellow of the Islamic Academy of Cambridge, UK.

Is-haq is the son of Alhaji Oloyede and the late Madam Oloyede.
