Early life and influences
Wikipedia says Omah Lay was born on 19 May 1997 and raised in Port Harcourt, attending Comprehensive High School before the University of Port Harcourt. It states that he comes from a musical family: his grandfather played percussion for the late highlife singer Celestine Ukwu, who died in 1977. In a 2026 interview with EE72 he confirmed this, saying he still listens to Ukwu’s music and that conversations with his mother about his grandfather gave him confidence and the sense that music is “in my blood”.
Wikipedia adds that he began in a rap group under the name Lil Street King, and at 16 moved to songwriting and production for other artists. It lists early production credits from 2018 to 2021, including songs for Kidoben Ace, Klug Ali, Sikiboi and Jhay Jhay. Earlier versions of online biographies claimed that he lost his father at 12, but Wikipedia says his father played the drums, and we found no interview that confirms the claim. We therefore do not state it.
Breakthrough: Get Layd and What Have We Done
He went solo in 2019 with “Do Not Disturb” and “Hello Brother”, signed to KeyQaad and began work on his debut EP Get Layd. In an interview quoted by Wikipedia he said he started work in August 2019 and had to stay off social media and “keep my head straight”. The EP’s songs “Bad Influence” and “You” were released in 2020. According to Wikipedia, “Bad Influence” became the most streamed Nigerian song on Apple Music at the end of 2020, and Get Layd reached number one on the Nigerian Apple Music chart. In November 2020 he released a second EP, What Have We Done, whose single “Godly” also reached number one.
Recognition followed quickly. On 3 July 2020 he was the first artist featured in Apple’s Africa Rising campaign, and BBC Radio 1Xtra put him on its “Hot for 2021” list. He won the Next Rated award at the 14th Headies in early 2021 and later was nominated for Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
The Uganda arrest
On 14 December 2020, after performing in Uganda, Omah Lay and singer Tems were arrested. Ugandan police said it was for violating Covid-19 lockdown rules. Wikipedia reports that the two were released two days later, that the Ugandan government apologised and that they were cleared of wrongdoing. The artists said they felt they had been set up.
Boy Alone and international growth
In March 2022 he released “Attention”, a collaboration with Justin Bieber that appeared on his debut album Boy Alone. It launched in 2022, debuted at number one on the Nigerian albums chart and led to a tour in the United States and Canada. A deluxe edition came in the summer of 2023, and he surpassed one billion Spotify streams that year. Wikipedia says he won Headies awards in 2020 and 2023, including best male artist and album for Boy Alone, and that he sold out the O2 Academy Brixton in London in early 2024. In 2024 he released “Holy Ghost” and a remix with French DJ Martin Solveig; Wikipedia credits it with more than 100 million streams on African platforms. In April 2025 he featured on Davido’s song “With You”.
Wikipedia also mentions criticism of an on-stage moment during his 2024 London show. We leave out the detail of that incident because it concerns a private individual.
The Grammy nomination
“With You”, Davido’s track featuring Omah Lay, was one of five nominees for Best African Music Performance at the 68th Grammy Awards. BBC News reported on 2 February 2026 that South African singer Tyla won the category for “Push 2 Start”, beating tracks by Burna Boy, Ayra Starr and Eddy Kenzo as well as the Davido song. Omah Lay therefore has a Grammy nomination but not a Grammy win; TheCable’s fact-check desk also flagged claims that Davido had won as false.
Clarity of Mind in 2026
Omah Lay’s second album came out on 3 April 2026 through KeyQaad, Sire Records and Warner Records. According to his label’s release, the 12-track record is his first full-length project since Boy Alone and includes “Artificial Happiness”, “Canada Breeze”, “Don’t Love Me”, “Julia”, “Waist”, “Holy Ghost”, “I Am” (the focus track) and “Amen”. The label says the album was previewed through “Spiritual Raves” in Berlin, Amsterdam and Lagos. The Nollywood Reporter noted in March 2026 that the project was expected to be produced largely by his long-term collaborator Tempoe and that Omah Lay had said he was forced to record an entirely new project after an artist he trusted stole his sound. That claim is his own and no individual has been publicly identified.
In the EE72 interview, the 28-year-old explained the delay: he stepped away from touring and social media to take care of himself and, in his words, “fall in love again” with art. He said he had worried about his mental health for a long time, that creating art was how he coped, and that he wanted to “go back to love” and “back to God”. The label’s description of the record centres on self-forgiveness, faith and desire, and its press material claims nearly three billion global streams, a figure that comes from the label rather than an independent audit.
Business and personal life
Wikipedia says he is the CEO of a music company called Boy Alone, according to his manager in an interview with OkayAfrica. The previous version of this article claimed that he owns a mansion in Lekki and has a wife; we found no credible report of either and omit them. In his 2026 interview he refers in general terms to “family, a partner, and myself” without naming anyone. He has voiced support for the #EndSARS protests, which Wikipedia quotes him describing in Harper’s Bazaar as being about “the people, with no political undertone whatsoever”.
What we could not verify
- That he lost his father at 12 or that he has siblings; we found no interview confirming either.
- Where exactly he lives, and whether he owns any property.
- Whether he is married or in a named relationship.
- The label’s “nearly three billion streams” figure, which is promotional.
- That a trusted artist “stole his sound”: it is his claim, reported without names.
- Some Wikipedia statements, such as streaming figures for “Holy Ghost”, which it does not source in the extract we read.
- His net worth: no credible number is published.
